Gemini from SPL is an M/S mastering processor designed specifically for mid signals such as vocals, snare and bass, as well as side signals such as guitar, cymbals and more spatial signals.

The mixing ratio for both stereo channels can be adjusted in connection with the stereo width controls, whilst the Gemini’s built-in elliptical filter cuts low-frequency ratios of the sideband as required.

A popular configuration is to place mid/side encoder in position 3, EQ in position 4 and the decoder stage in position 5. This enables separate processing of mid and side signals before combining the two into a left/right stereo signal.

For additional dynamic processing, a compressor could also be added to position 5, moving the decoder stage to position 6.

M/S coding is a perfect route not only to gaining access to individual elements in a mix within the sum signal, but also as a means to work on the stereo panorama.

Gemini boasts a range of powerful features adept at helping to achieve the perfect master. Balance control positions mid signals within the panorama, whilst trim controls adjust levels between mid and side signals.

SPL’s Gemini and Hermes processors can operate in their complete range of functions as stand-alone devices, however joining the two together enables even more possibilities.

Gemini’s encoder and decoder stages can be paired with inserts of Hermes to exactly specify the position of mid/side encoders and decoders within the processing chain.
